Preview: Mount Vernon Mustangs vs. Prince Avenue Christian Wolverines
Mount Vernon is 0-3 against Prince Avenue Christian since August of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Mount Vernon Mustangs will face off against the Prince Avenue Christian Wolverines at 7:00 p.m. One thing working in Mount Vernon's favor is that they have now posted big point totals in their last six contests.
With a playoff game on the line, Mount Vernon rose to the challenge on Friday. They blew past Pepperell, posting a 35-7 win at home. The result was nothing new for Mount Vernon, who have now won six matchups by 20 points or more so far this season.
Mount Vernon's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Sam Nazarian, who threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns on only 14 passes, and Walker Warshaw, who rushed for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Warshaw has been hot recently, having posted two or more rushing touchdowns the last four times he's played. Mount Vernon also got help from Nate Thomas who showed off his sure hands for 85 receiving yards.
Meanwhile, Prince Avenue Christian came tearing into Friday's contest with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 46 points) and they left with even more momentum. In a tight matchup that could have gone either way, they made off with a 1-0 victory over Athens Christian. After a 44-15 finish the last time they played, Prince Avenue Christian and Athens Christian decided to play a little more cautiously this time around.
Mount Vernon has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season. As for Prince Avenue Christian, they have yet to lose a game at home this season, leaving them with a 10-1 record.
Mount Vernon took a serious blow against Prince Avenue Christian when the teams last played back in November of 2022, falling 47-14. Can Mount Vernon avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
