League recap: Bessemer City tops Highland Tech to extend winning streak

1A Conference 3 recap November 5, 2013

Bessemer City extended the longest winning streak in 1A Conference 3 this week by beating Highland Tech, 50-7. This was the team's fourth consecutive win.

Thomas Jefferson Academy took down Pine Lake Prep 61-7 last week, the largest margin of any game. Mason Martin threw for 69 yards and 2 touchdowns, ran for 56 yards and caught 2 passes for 15 yards during the win.

Nick Mintz provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Gryphons topped the Pride. He completed 10 passes for 97 yards and 1 touchdown and also ran for 29 yards. Mintz's favorite target this week was Efrim Borders, who caught 7 passes for 97 yards.

Cedric Mackey was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 107 yards on 17 carries as Bessemer City defeated Pine Lake Prep. Teammate Tyler Bess added to the ground attack by rushing for 63 yards.

Jerry Cash's team's Martin and Borders have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-1 quarterback Martin has thrown for 1,152 yards this season, while Borders has 40 catches for 687 yards. Larry Boone's team's Mackey leads the league in rushing yards with 1,424.

Joey Bernardini of the Community School of Davidson is only 66 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. In 146 carries Bernardini has accumulated 934 yard this year.

As it stands, the Yellowjackets are in second, while Cherryville is in third.
