League recap: Fort Myers climbs in state rankings with win

Fort Myers moved up to 86 from 120 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 6A District 11. The Green Wave climbed the ranks as a result of a 36-31 win over Charlotte.

South Fort Myers extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating North Fort Myers, 49-0. The win marks sixth in a row for the the Wolfpack.

Island Coast's dynamic duo of Kurt Benkert and T.J. Johnson proved tough for Ida Baker to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Benkert threw for 191 yards and two touchdowns and Johnson had 104 yards receiving. James Washington helped Island Coast's passing attack out by catching four balls for 47 yards.

T.J. Douglas was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 213 yards on 22 carries as Fort Myers topped the Bulldogs. T.J. Morgan also contributed to the rushing game with 107 yards on the ground.

Island Coast's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Gators feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Benkert has thrown for 1039 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, while Ter'Rohne Franklin has 15 catches for 315 yards. Devon Calhoun leads the league in rushing with 575 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Sammy Sirianni's team takes on Island Coast. The Green Wave are currently in second, while Joe Bowen's team is in third.

South Fort Myers took down the Red Knights 49-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
