Softball Game Preview: Winthrop Ramblers vs. Spruce Mountain Phoenix

The Winthrop Ramblers will challenge the Spruce Mountain Phoenix at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Winthrop comes in still looking for their first win of the season.

Winthrop is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to ten runs on Wednesday, they were much more limited against Cony on Saturday. They came up short against the Rams, falling 18-1.

Meanwhile, Spruce Mountain hadn't done well against Hall-Dale recently (they were 1-7 in their previous eight matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Phoenix put the hurt on the Bulldogs with a sharp 14-4 victory. The game was the first time the Phoenix have beaten the Bulldogs on their field since May 1, 2019.

Rylee Turner spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on seven hits.

On the hitting side, Devin Bryant was a standout: she got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April of 2025. Bella Chretien was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four runs, one double, and one RBI.

The win made it two in a row for Spruce Mountain and bumps their season record up to 3-6. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.5 runs over those games. As for Winthrop, their loss dropped their record down to 0-6.

Winthrop suffered a grim 9-3 defeat to Spruce Mountain in their previous matchup back in May of 2025. Can the Ramblers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
