Recap: Vasquez Mustangs vs. Fillmore Flashes
The Vasquez Mustangs had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 32.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Saturday. Couldn't have asked for a better start to 2024 than the 82-44 blowout they got at home against Fillmore. Given Vasquez's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 614th, while Fillmore is ranked 1231st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Vasquez to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jayden Alatorre, who scored 15 points along with three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Alatorre has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Noah Rowley, who scored nine points along with six steals.
Despite the loss, Fillmore still got an impressive performance from Isaac Weslow, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds. Octavio Orozco was another key contributor, scoring six points along with nine rebounds.
Vasquez's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-7. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 78.6 points per game. As for Fillmore, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-12.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Vasquez will take on Valley Torah at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Valley Torah knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past four matchups -- so hopefully Vasquez likes a good challenge. As for Fillmore, they will be playing at home against Carpinteria at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
