Basketball Recap: Buena Comes Up Short

Buena lost against Pueblo back in December of 2022 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Buena Colts were outmatched by the Pueblo Warriors and fell 70-38. While losing is never fun, the Colts can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 154th, while the Warriors are ranked 27th).

Buena's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Icsiss Perez, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Kalel Palacios, who posted 11 points and seven rebounds.

Even though they lost, Buena smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in six consecutive matches.

America Cazares continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Pueblo, going 10 for 25 on her way to 28 points and eight steals. Cazares is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last 16 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Sara Galindo, who scored 16 points and five steals.

Buena's loss dropped their record down to 5-7. As for Pueblo, they pushed their record up to 15-2 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road.

Buena has already played their next contest, a 54-48 defeat against Rincon/University on the 20th. As for Pueblo, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 68-66 victory against Catalina Foothills on the 20th.
