Pilot Point and Whitesboro are an even 5-5 against one another since October of 2015, but not for long. Pilot Point will host Whitesboro at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
Pilot Point is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Pottsboro just ended the team's four-game winning streak on Thursday. They lost 35-14 to the Cardinals. The matchup marked the Bearcats' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Although Pilot Point took the loss, they still got scores from Hunter Newman and Caden David.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Whitesboro). They blew past A Plus Academy 78-6 on Friday. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 65-0.
Whitesboro's win came from a few key players Pilot Point will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Colt Fagan, who threw for 75 yards and four TDs, and also rushed for 46 yards and one score. His passing game has become a key predictor of Whitesboro's success: the team is 4-1 when his passer rating is 110 or higher, but only 1-2 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Rip Harper, who rushed for 64 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only seven carries.
Whitesboro was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 348 rushing yards. They are a perfect 3-0 when they've run for more than 200 yards.
Whitesboro didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Shayne Gabbert and Ian Bruce.
Whitesboro is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 49.3 points over those games. As for Pilot Point, their defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 6-2.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Pilot Point has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 259 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Whitesboro struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 213.5 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Pilot Point ended up a good deal behind Whitesboro in their previous matchup back in November of 2024, losing 37-21. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Fagan, who rushed for 119 yards and three scores on only 11 carries, and also threw for 170 yards and one TD on only 14 passes. Now that Pilot Point knows the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
