Preview: Garner Trojans vs. Wake Forest Cougars
Garner is 0-4 against Wake Forest since December of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Garner Trojans will look to defend their home field against the Wake Forest Cougars at 7:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Last Friday, Garner got the win against Corinth Holders by a conclusive 37-14. The win was just what Garner needed coming off of a 48-7 loss in their prior match.
Garner's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Isaiah Dawson led the charge by picking up 92 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Braden Selvage, who threw for 179 yards and three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Wake Forest's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their third straight loss. They fell just short of Millbrook by a score of 45-42.
Wake Forest's defeat came about despite a quality game from Rico Alston, who rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns on only 14 carries. Kavon Simmons was another key contributor, throwing for 218 yards and two touchdowns.
With Garner's victory and Wake Forest's loss, both teams now sport identical 6-4 records.
Garner might still be hurting after the 33-7 loss they got from Wake Forest when the teams last played back in February of 2021. Thankfully for Garner, Michael Dipasquale (who rushed for 94 yards and three touchdowns, and also caught a touchdown) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
