Softball Recap: Cathedral Catholic Comes Up Short

Cathedral Catholic extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 13-9 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 4-3 heartbreaker at the hands of the Patrick Henry Patriots. The Dons were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Patriots apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Mimi Botticelli spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on three hits and racked up ten Ks.

At the plate, Anna Janis was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-4 with two runs and one triple. Nia Talatiana was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one triple.

As for Patrick Henry, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 9-11. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted against Cathedral Catholic since April 25, 2022.

On Patrick Henry's side, Zoe Rutherford made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits. Rutherford has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March of 2024.

Rutherford wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Angelina Mazon, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run. Riley Teixiera also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

Cathedral Catholic has already played their next matchup, a 3-2 loss against Point Loma on the 1st. As for Patrick Henry, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 4-0 victory against Academy of Our Lady of Peace on the 1st.
