Similar to baseball, the Albuquerque/Rio Rancho area is producing the best softball in New Mexico, according to the MaxPreps Computer Rankings presented by the Army National Guard.

Class 6A includes three of the state's top five teams from this area. LaCueva (Albuquerque), representing District 2, is the No. 1 team with a 23-2 record. District 1 teams Volcano Vista (Albuquerque) and Cleveland (Rio Rancho) are Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Volcano Vista has a 22-3 record, while Cleveland is 21-5.

However, a challenge is coming from the Las Cruces area. In Class 6A, Onate (Las Cruces), a District 3 representative, is the state's No. 3 team this week with a 22-4 record. Las Cruces (18-8), representing District 3 as well, ranks No. 7 in the state.

And another Las Cruces team, Centennial, is the No. 8 team in the state. The District 3 representative, additionally, is the second-strongest team in Class 5A. District 1 also has the current power in 5A with Aztec at No. 6, Piedra Vista (Farmington) at No. 9 and Miyamura (Gallup) at No. 16.

Class 4A is quite unusual because its five top-ranked teams all come from different districts, Nos. 1 through 5. Robertson (Las Vegas) holds the highest position at No. 10. But two others are in the top 20.

Class A/3A has at least one outstanding team, Dexter, which is No. 12 in the state. Dexter and No. 30 Loving both represent District 4.

The top five teams in each class follow with state ranking and districts represented.
