Softball Recap: Mt. Vernon Takes Down Ranked Houston

Mt. Vernon faced Houston in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Mountaineers blew past the Tigers 14-4. The Mountaineers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine contests by seven runs or more this season.

Emily Schubert spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on eight hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Rae Downing, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and one triple. The team also got some help courtesy of Jocelyn Liss, who scored a run while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.

Mt. Vernon was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .306 or higher in six consecutive matches.

Mt. Vernon has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. As for Houston, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-4.

Mt. Vernon didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 13-0 victory against Versailles on the 12th. As for Houston, they have also already played their next match, a 17-7 loss against Diamond on the 12th.
