Volleyball Recap: Compass Academy Comes Up Short

After flying high against Coahoma on Tuesday, Compass Academy came back down to earth. The Cougars lost 3-0 to the Denver City Mustangs on Saturday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Cougars of the 3-2 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in October of 2024.

While Compass Academy was not able to make it on the board, they still kept things close, especially in the third set. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-19, 25-16, 25-23.

Their offense was headlined by Jalie Lankford and Audra Wilson, who picked up eight kills apiece. They got some help from Bella Carrasco and her 17 assists. Camdyn Whitaker controlled things from the service line, finishing with three aces.

Compass Academy's loss dropped their record down to 18-8. As for Denver City, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 22-8 record this season.

Compass Academy and Denver City should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. The Cougars (ranked 342nd) will meet Lamesa (ranked 1392nd) at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Denver City will take on Crane at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank advantage (258 vs. 1056).
