Basketball Recap: Manzano Monarchs vs. Sandia Matadors

Manzano lost against Sandia back in December of 2022 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The Manzano Monarchs took a blow against the Sandia Matadors, falling 85-30. While losing is never fun, the Monarchs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 60th, while the Matadors are ranked second).

Despite the loss, Manzano still got an impressive performance from Zaria Gomez, who went 8 for 19 to rack up 20 points.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Sandia to victory, but perhaps none more so than Audri Wright, who went 6 of 11 en route to 15 points along with five assists and three steals. That's the most points Wright has posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Nadia Randall, who went 5 for 12 on her way to 12 points in addition to eight rebounds and four steals.

Manzano's loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 10-8. As for Sandia, the victory (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 18-1.

Manzano has already played their next match, a 57-56 defeat against Capital on the 31st. As for Sandia, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, an 85-32 win against Eldorado on the 31st.
