Softball Recap: Hoover Starts Season with Win at Home

Hoover took care of business in their home opener (and then some) on Tuesday. Everything went their way against the Marshall Eagles as the Hoover Tornados made off with a 23-9 victory. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last four times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

Evelyn Ortiz was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and eight unearned) runs off two hits. Ortiz was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in March of 2024.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Natalie Menasaka, who scored four runs and stole two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in hits (two). Haylee Malagon was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-3.

Hoover always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .765. Their OBP was a full 0 higher than the also-impressive .560 that Marshall posted.

Hoover wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next matchup, a 15-5 defeat against Firebaugh on the 20th. As for Marshall, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 21-9 loss against Pasadena on the 25th.
