Lawrence Free State hadn't done well against Mill Valley recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Saturday. The Firebirds sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-1 win over the Jaguars. While the Firebirds didn't have the best season last year (they finished 14-18), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

The match was a true back-and-forth as no team won consecutive sets, but in the end it was Lawrence Free State who won the one that mattered. The match finished with set scores of 25-18, 12-25, 25-23.

Lawrence Free State can attribute much of their success to Taylor Stucker, who had seven digs and three aces.

Mill Valley lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Haedyn Lynnes, who had six digs and three aces.

Lawrence Free State is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-3 record this season. As for Mill Valley, their defeat ended a 15-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 7-3.

Lawrence Free State didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 2-1 victory against Olathe South on the 13th. As for Mill Valley, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 2-0 win against Lee's Summit on the 13th.
