Football Recap: Stuart Starts off Right with Win over Cody-Kilgore

Stuart gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Cody-Kilgore Cowboys/Cowgirls 75-8. The victory was nothing new for the Broncos as they're now sitting on 11 straight dating back to last season.

Stuart's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Austin Connot led the charge by rushing for 112 yards and three scores on only 11 carries. Those 112 rushing yards gave Connot a new career-high. Owen Littau was another key player, rushing for 84 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Stuart was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 295 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 189 rushing yards in seven consecutive games dating back to last season.

Stuart didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Littau and Drew Schmaderer. Stuart received some extra help from Tommy Paxton, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.

Despite the loss, Cody-Kilgore saw an underclassman step up: freshman Greyson Hollopeter rushed for 65 yards and one TD. Hollopeter showed off some serious burst, cutting through the defense on one rush that went for 56 yards.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Stuart is packing up and heading out for their first away game of the season: they will challenge Sumner-Eddyville-Miller at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Cody-Kilgore, they will head out to face off against Garden County at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
