Texas high school basketball: UIL state championship weekend preview

No. 8 Lake Highlands, No. 13 Beaumont United compete for Class 6A state title.

The high school basketball season in the Lone Star State enters its final weekend of play with state semifinals matchups taking place Thursday and tomorrow at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The winners advance to Saturday's state championship games.

In the state's highest classification a pair of nationally ranked teams take the court tomorrow night as No. 13 Beaumont United (Beaumont) faces off against Brennan (San Antonio) and No. 8 Lake Highlands (Dallas) takes on DeSoto in the Class 6A semifinal contests.

Lake Highlands makes its first appearance in the state semifinals since 1968 led by top-ranked junior Tre Johnson, who was recently selected as one of give MaxPreps National Player of the Year finalists. Beaumont United is the two-time defending Class 5A state champions before moving up to Class 6A prior to the season. The Timberwolves are 102-4 over the past three seasons and led by top 50 Washington signee Wesley Yates III.

The Class 5A state semifinals tips off Friday with Kimball (Dallas) against Veterans Memorial (San Antonio) before Ellison (Killeen) takes on Mansfield Summit (Arlington). Kimball sits on the bubble of the MaxPreps Top 25, while Ellison just entered the top 50 of the national rankings this week.



Oak Cliff Faith Family Academy (Dallas) is favored to repeat in Class 4A state champions after knocking off the top contender in the field Carter (Dallas) 71-61 in the state quarterfinals. The Eagles take on Randall (Amarillo) Friday in the state semifinals with Boerne and Washington (Houston) facing off in the other semifinal contest. Oak Cliff Faith Family is another team which sits on the bubble of the MaxPreps Top 25.

The Alamodome will be home to 18 state tournament games over the next three days with six teams crowned as 2022-23 state champions on Saturday. Check out the full schedule below.
