Baseball Game Preview: Ionia Bulldogs vs. Lansing Catholic Cougars

Ionia hasn't had much luck against Lansing Catholic recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Bulldogs are taking a road trip to face off against the Cougars at 4:00 p.m. Ionia will be looking to extend their current eight-game winning streak.

Ionia's pitching crew heads into the game hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Monday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Pewamo-Westphalia 2-0.

The result came thanks to Trevor Hodges's shutout, as he gave up just three hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up a single earned run in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Ionia saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Colt Piercefield, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

St. Francis typically has all the answers at home, but on Thursday Lansing Catholic proved too difficult a challenge. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Gladiators, sneaking past 4-2.

Ionia pushed their record up to 14-5 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Lansing Catholic, their record now sits at 14-3.

Ionia couldn't quite get it done against Lansing Catholic in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 as they fell 6-2. Can the Bulldogs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
