Baseball Game Preview: Gilmer County Titans vs. Wirt County Tigers

Gilmer County is 8-1 against Wirt County since April of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Titans will face off against the Tigers at 5:00 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Gilmer County has five straight wins, Wirt County has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

On Friday, Gilmer County beat Roane County 9-6.

Kolten Holbert made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out six batters over 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two runs and one double.

In other batting news, Gilmer County let Guage Goodrich and Remington Huffman run wild. Goodrich went 1-for-3 with four RBI, while Huffman went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Those four RBI gave Goodrich a new career-high.

Meanwhile, Wirt County came up short against St. Joseph Central on Tuesday and fell 4-1.

Wirt County saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Wyatt Boice, who went 1-for-3 with one double.

Gilmer County's victory was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-2. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.8 runs on average over those games. As for Wirt County, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-6.

Everything went Gilmer County's way against Wirt County in their previous meeting two weeks ago, as Gilmer County made off with a 10-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Titans since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
