Softball Recap: Mendota Takes a Loss

Mendota extended their losing streak to five on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 2-6 in the process. They came up short against the Kewanee Boilermakers, falling 21-5. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Trojans of the 13-3 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

Mendota saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ava Eddy, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two doubles. Another was Karson Doyle, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run.

As for Kewanee, their record now sits at 10-7. The result was nothing new for the Boilermakers, who have now won six games by six runs or more so far this season.

On Kewanee's side, Kalleigh Gale and Lyric Duytschaver made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Gale struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Duytschaver tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Gale has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in eight consecutive appearances. At the plate, Gale went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base, while Duytschaver went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. That's the most hits Duytschaver has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, Kewanee got a massive performance out of Macee Pickering, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Those five RBI gave Pickering a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Rylee Blades, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and two doubles.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Kewanee beat Mendota by a score of 9-4 later that day.
