The St. Joseph Flyers will face off against the Second Baptist Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (St. Joseph has nine straight victories, Second Baptist has four straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
If St. Joseph beats Second Baptist with ten runs on Tuesday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two matchups with that exact score. The Flyers walked away with a 10-6 win over Holy Cross on Thursday. St. Joseph's victory was all the more impressive since the Knights were averaging only 2.55 runs allowed on the season.
Shayne Meismer made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over three innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 17 consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Valery Villareal was excellent, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Ava Martinez, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
St. Joseph kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in nine consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Second Baptist lost 14-4 to Lutheran South Academy last Thursday.
St. Joseph's win bumped their record up to 22-4. As for Second Baptist, their loss dropped their record down to 6-11.
St. Joseph got the 'W' when the teams last played back in May of 2023 against Second Baptist by a conclusive 17-2 score. Do the Flyers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Eagles turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
