Softball Game Preview: Independence Eagles vs. Centennial Cougars

The Independence Eagles are taking a road trip to face off against the Centennial Cougars at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Independence is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.

Independence barely beat Summit the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Eagles were the clear victors by a 19-11 margin over the Spartans on Tuesday. 19 seems to be a good number for the Eagles as the squad scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.

The team relied heavily on Reagan Maxon, who went 4-for-5 with four runs, five RBI, and two doubles. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Piper Johnson, who went 2-for-5 with four runs.

They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Independence kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 19 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, Centennial was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their seventh straight loss. They came up short against Brentwood, falling 15-0. Cougars fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Bruins since on Tuesday.

Independence pushed their record up to 16-14 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. As for Centennial, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-17.

Everything went Independence's way against Centennial when the teams last played back in March, as Independence made off with a 14-4 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
