The Mingus Marauders will head out to face off against the Coconino Panthers at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Mingus is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
Coconino will challenge a team with plenty of momentum: Mingus extended their winning streak to three on Thursday. The Marauders put the hurt on Mohave with a sharp 13-3 win.
Zaiden Ballesteros spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned runs on six hits.
On the hitting side, Mingus got a massive performance out of Carter Wacker, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. That's the most runs Wacker has posted since back in April of 2024. Xzayvier Buckner was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, one triple, and one run.
Mingus always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .588. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in four consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, it may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Coconino ultimately got the result they hoped for on Monday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 15-14 victory over Marcos de Niza. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Panthers.
Tate Jones and Fitz Guinan made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, Jones pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Guinan struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and five unearned) runs off seven hits. Jones has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. At the plate, Jones scored a run while going 2-for-4, while Guinan scored a run while going 3-for-5.
In other batting news, Corbin Derr was a standout: he went 3-for-5 with one home run and three RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Coconino's success: when he posts at least three RBI the team is 4-1 (and 3-9-1 when he doesn't). Abiu Chairez also deserves some recognition as he scored his first runs of the season.
Mingus' record is now 7-13-1. As for Coconino, their record now sits at 7-10-1.
Mingus was able to grind out a solid win over Coconino when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 20-15. Will the Marauders repeat their success, or do the Panthers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
