Basketball Recap: Owen Comes Up Short

If Owen was riding high fresh off their 53-15 takedown of NCSSM: Morganton last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Owen Warhorses took a blow against the Avery County Vikings on Friday, falling 66-27. The defeat continues a trend for the Warhorses in their matchups with the Vikings: they've now lost six in a row.

Owen's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Elly Wright, who posted ten points. Wright is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last three games she's played. Savannah Hollingsworth was another key player, putting up seven points.

Avery County can attribute much of their success to Caroline Hollifield, who went 5 of 11 to rack up 15 points and three steals. Another player making a difference was Marley Jones, who put up 11 points and three steals.

Owen's defeat dropped their record down to 3-19. As for Avery County, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 14-6.

Looking ahead, Owen will welcome Madison at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Avery County, they are taking a road trip to challenge NCSSM: Morganton at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Avery County is facing NCSSM: Morganton at the right time seeing as NCSSM: Morganton is stuck on a 16-game losing streak.
