Basketball Recap: South Lenoir's Losing Streak Snapped at Nine Games

South Lenoir had to endure a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season, but that streak is no more. They strolled past the Lejeune Devil Pups with points to spare on Wednesday, taking the game 50-32. The Blue Devils' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.

South Lenoir's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Makenzie Herring, who posted 19 points and four steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Herring has scored at least a third of South Lenoir's points. Gracie Tyndall was another key player, going 8 of 18 on her way to 16 points and six rebounds.

Despite the defeat, Lejeune saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Scarlett McLean went 8 of 11 on her way to 21 points and seven steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points McLean has scored all season.

South Lenoir's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-7. As for Lejeune, they dropped their record down to 1-7 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. South Lenoir will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Kinston at 6:30 p.m. on January 3, 2025. Kinston will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something South Lenoir surely won't give up without a fight. As for Lejeune, they will venture away from home to face off against Lakewood at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
