Salina Central dropped their record down to 15-5 on Friday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Newton Railroaders by a score of 5-4. The Mustangs were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Railroaders earlier this season, when they won 10-4.

Bailey Bruce was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with one run and one RBI. Paityn Berndt also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

As for Newton, the win got them back to even at 1-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory they have posted since April 5, 2024.

On Newton's side, Taylor Rose spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on six hits.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Caroline Rickard, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Addison Zerger was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Coming up, Salina Central will look to defend their home field on Friday against West at 4:00 p.m. As for Newton, they will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Great Bend at 4:00 p.m. on the 15th. The Panthers will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something the Railroaders surely won't give up without a fight.
