The Oceanside Pirates will square off against the Mount Miguel Matadors at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Oceanside took a loss when they played away from home on September 5th, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed two weeks ago. They took their matchup with ease, bagging a 41-14 win over Helix. The Pirates' offense stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most points they've scored all season.
Oceanside found their leader in sophomore Anthony Barquinero, who threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns while completing 87.5% of his passes, and also punched in one TD on the ground. Neke Letuli helped Barquinero out on the ground, rushing for 106 yards and one score.
Oceanside didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Helix to a completion percentage of just 50%. The team can thank Mykah Faletoi for the heroic effort on defense: he. Given Barquinero's standout performance, it's clear Helix's secondary just wasn't on the same level.
Oceanside's defense didn't let the opposing QB, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for three sacks. Adrian Luna was especially locked on to Helix's QB and sacked him twice.
Meanwhile, Mount Miguel waltzed into their game on Friday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the Titans 35-32.
Oceanside better keep an eye on Jeremiah Loper. He was instrumental in Mount Miguel's win, throwing for 333 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 14.5 yards per attempt, and also rushing for 44 yards. Those 333 passing yards gave Loper a new career-high. Mount Miguel's leading receiver Aj Logan was Loper's top target yet again, picking up 63 receiving yards and a pair of TDs.
Special teams was a major factor in the game for Mount Miguel, racking up 15 points in total. All came from Clint Ettleman: he went 5-for-5 kicking field goals for 15 points.
Oceanside's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-3. As for Mount Miguel, their victory bumped their record up to 4-1.
