League recap: North Medford tops South Medford to extend winning streak

6A Special District 1 recap October 22, 2013

North Medford added to the longest winning streak in 6A Special District 1 this week by beating South Medford, 42-14. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.

Thurston lost to Sheldon 56-23 last week, the largest margin of any game. Brendin Quinn threw for 59 yards and 1 touchdown and ran for 50 yards in the loss.

Troy Fowler threw for 284 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Ray Roundtree provided a threat through the air and on the ground as South Eugene fell to Crater. He completed 30 passes for 395 yards and also ran for 55 yards. Roundtree's favorite target this week was Liam Duncan, who caught 9 passes for 147 yards.

Quinn was a key player and the best on defense this week as Thurston lost to the Irish. The 6-foot-5 senior pulled down 1 interception.

Fowler and Nick Janakas gave North Medford a balanced attack in passing and rushing last week. Will Spence also contributed to the rushing game with 16 yards on the ground.

The Comets' Ty Fox and Kory Bennett led the league in both passing and receiving yards. 6-2 quarterback Fox has thrown for 2,628 yards this season, while Bennett has 50 catches for 801 yards. Janakas from Mike Mitchell's team leads the league in rushing with 884 yards.

The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Sheldon and Grants Pass. Lane Johnson's team enters the game ranked sixth in the state, while the Cavemen ranks 17th.
