Softball Game Preview: Edwards County Lions vs. Gibson Southern Titans

The Edwards County Lions will venture away from home to take on the Gibson Southern Titans at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Edwards County is coming into the match hot, having won their last 11 games.

On Thursday, Edwards County needed a bit of extra time to put away Carmi-White County. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Bulldogs, sneaking past 8-7. Eight seems to be a good number for the Lions as the team scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.

Allison Groff spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and five unearned) runs on five hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Grace Bishop, who fired off two home runs, three runs, and four RBI while going 2-for-3. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. Lily Jones also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.

They weren't the only ones working in the home run department: Edwards County lost a few balls and finished the game with three home runs. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Carmi-White County didn't launched any home runs.

Meanwhile, Gibson Southern made easy work of Forest Park on Thursday and carried off a 13-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Titans, who have now won five contests by seven runs or more so far this season.

Gibson Southern is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Edwards County, their victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-1.
