Softball Recap: Cedar Valley takes loss despite strong performances from Maddalynn Jensen and Jeslyn Collins

Softball Recap: Cedar Valley Aviators vs. Maple Mountain Golden Eagles

Cedar Valley was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fifth straight loss. They fell just short of the Maple Mountain Golden Eagles by a score of 9-7. The result was an unpleasant reminder to Cedar Valley of the 11-5 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April.

Catharina Underwood spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and six unearned) runs on five hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't pitched less than five innings in seven consecutive pitching appearances.

At the plate, Jeslyn Collins and Maddalynn Jensen stepped up to the plate in a big way. Collins scored a run and stole two bases while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances, while Jensen went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Eva Okusi, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4.

Even though they lost, Cedar Valley was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .394. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Maple Mountain only posted a batting average of .172.

On Maple Mountain's side, Izzie Groneman was incredible, going 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was McClain Carter, who scored two runs while going 1-for-3.

Cedar Valley's loss dropped their record down to 11-11. As for Maple Mountain, their win bumped their record up to 9-12.

Cedar Valley will head out on the road to take on Mountain Ridge at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Mountain Ridge is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.9 runs per game this season. As for Maple Mountain, they will be playing at home against Springville at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Springville is coming into the game with four straight victories on the road, so Maple Mountain will have to stop a team with plenty of momentum.
