Baseball Recap: Weld Central Takes a Loss

After flying high against Grand Valley last Saturday, Weld Central came back down to earth. The Rebels fell just short of the Platte Valley Broncos by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday. The Rebels have struggled against the Broncos recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost meeting.

Luke Witzel put in work while hitting and pitching. He struck out ten batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits. That's the fewest hits he has allowed since back in March. He was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 3-for-3. Weld Central is 2-1 when Witzel posts two or more stolen bases, but 4-5 otherwise.

Witzel wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Marcello Rossi, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.

Weld Central's loss dropped their record down to 6-6. As for Platte Valley, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season.

Coincidentally, Weld Central and Platte Valley will both be playing Strasburg the next time they take the field. The Broncos will host the Indians at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, while the Rebels will head out to face them at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
