Baseball Recap: Mattoon Takes a Loss

Mattoon extended their losing streak to four on Friday, dropping their season record down to 11-11 in the process. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost a 6-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Mt. Vernon Rams. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Greenwave have suffered since May 16, 2024.

As for Mt. Vernon, they pushed their record up to 8-13 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games.

For Mt. Vernon's part, they let Tyler Curry and Alex Kiefer run wild. Curry went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, while Kiefer went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI. That's the most runs Curry has posted since back in April. Ryker Perigo was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Looking ahead, Mattoon will head out to face off against Taylorville at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Tornadoes will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something the Greenwave surely won't give up without a fight. As for Mt. Vernon, they will face off against Herrin at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
