Basketball Game Preview: Avinger Indians vs. Union Hill Bulldogs

The Avinger Indians will venture away from home to square off against the Union Hill Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Avinger has now lost 15 straight, leaving the team hunting for their first win since December 3.

Avinger is headed into the match out to prove that what happened against Avery on Tuesday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Avinger was dealt a 63-27 loss at the hands of Avery. The Indians were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 37-9.

Despite the defeat, Avinger saw an underclassman step up: freshman Kendyn Moore posted 17 points.

Meanwhile, Union Hill came into Tuesday's game having lost three straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They secured a 50-45 W over Bloomburg on Tuesday.

Avinger better keep an eye on EJ Mowery. He was instrumental in Union Hill's win, dropping a double-double on 34 points and ten rebounds. Mowery is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last 18 games he's played. Micah Barlow was another key player, putting up five points.

Union Hill's victory was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 9-10. As for Avinger, their loss dropped their record down to 1-20.

Avinger suffered a grim 42-21 defeat to Union Hill in their previous meeting back in January of 2024. Can Avinger avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
