Thrasher retires from diamond; Baker signs with Missouri Southern; MIAA boys lax all-stars announced.
The rosters for the second annual Maryland Crab Bowl High School All-Star Football Game were announced during a news conference Wednesday at Towson University.
The game, which showcases the best high school talent from Baltimore and Washington, D.C., will be played on Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the Towson University campus.
“Last year’s talent was the best the state’s ever seen,” said Chuck Harmon, the president and co-founder of the event. “Maryland in the past has not had that national reputation that other states such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Texas, California and so on has in the nation. But Maryland is quickly rising. We’ve got some athletes in this state that can play for any university in the United States.”
Washington won last year’s inaugural game, 32-21, but perhaps more important than the final score was the fact that several players received football scholarship offers as a result of their participation in the game, played in front of many college scouts.
“Last year we were fortunate to have 88 kids involved in the game,” Harmon said. “Out of those 88 kids, 83 student-athletes received college scholarships. We had 27 kids, as a result of playing in the Crab Bowl, get a chance to play and earn college scholarships.”
Wednesday’s roster announcement — known as the Super 60 — was just the initial list of kids who made the cut. Harmon intends to add 14-15 players to each team before December’s game.
A Super 60 mandatory combine will be held Aug. 1 at the Athletic Republic in Annapolis.

Baseball: Glenelg coach makes bullpen coaching call
Glenelg baseball coach Tom Thrasher, 58, is retiring as the team's head baseball coach and will turn the reins over to his assistant, Glenelg alum Dave Boteler.
Thrasher turns over a program he has led since 1997 and took to state titles in 1998 and 1999. Despite turning over the varsity team to Boteler, Thrasher will stay involved by coaching the junior varsity team next season, a position he held in 1995 when the varsity team also won the state championship.
Thrasher will continue in his role as a U.S. History teacher at the Glenwood Middle School.
