Softball Recap: Blacksburg Takes a Loss

Blacksburg had lost six straight at home, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 5-16 to make it seven. They came up short against the Lord Botetourt Cavaliers, falling 18-1. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Cavaliers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 18-1 on Wednesday.

Blacksburg saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Riley Spence, who went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

As for Lord Botetourt, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-10 record this season. 18 seems to be a good number for them as the squad scooped up a victory with the same number of runs in their previous game.

On Lord Botetourt's side, Olivia Pierce made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits (and only one walk). Pierce has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 14 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Abby Perkey, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. She is on a roll when it comes to home runs, as she's now launched at least one in each of the last three games she's played. Gracelynn Clark was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Lord Botetourt has already played their next game, a 16-10 win against Northside on the 15th. Hopefully Blacksburg paid attention to the Cavaliers' contest: the next time they hit the field , they'll take on the Cavaliers at 5:00 p.m.
