Mt. Vernon entered their tilt with Mattoon on Friday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-4 win over the Greenwave. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Rams have posted against the Greenwave since March 26, 2016.

Mt. Vernon let Tyler Curry and Alex Kiefer run wild. Curry went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, while Kiefer went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI. That's the most runs Curry has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Ryker Perigo, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Mt. Vernon's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-13. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Mattoon, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last seven matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-11 record this season.

Mt. Vernon will square off against Herrin at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Mattoon, they will take on Taylorville at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Tornadoes will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something the Greenwave surely won't give up without a fight.
