Preview: Sweeny Bulldogs vs. San Marcos Rattlers

The Sweeny Bulldogs will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the San Marcos Rattlers at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. Both teams come into the matchup bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Even though Wharton scored an imposing 56 points on Tuesday, Sweeny still came out on top. Sweeny walked away with a 64-56 win over Wharton. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Sweeny.

It was another big night for Kendrick Hernandez, who scored 19 points along with seven rebounds. Those seven rebounds set a new season-high mark for him. Another player making a difference was Warrick Hernandez, who scored 13 points.

Meanwhile, San Marcos entered their tilt with Smithson Valley with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. San Marcos took down Smithson Valley 74-60 on Tuesday. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.

San Marcos' victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cash Good, who scored 21 points along with eight assists and seven rebounds. Good continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. Zyair Jolivette was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists.

Sweeny pushed their record up to 9-7 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 66.0 points per game. As for San Marcos, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 14-4 record this season.

Thursday's match is shaping up to be a scrappy contest: Sweeny have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 32.4 rebounds per game. It's a different story for San Marcos, though, as they've been averaging only 38.6 rebounds per game. Given Sweeny's sizeable advantage in that area, San Marcos will need to find a way to close that gap.
