Preview: Bruce Trojans vs. Calhoun City Wildcats
Bruce is 0-10 against Calhoun City since February of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Bruce Trojans will head out on the road to face off against the Calhoun City Wildcats at 6:00 p.m. Both teams come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Even though Bruce has not done well against Vardaman recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Bruce strolled past Vardaman with points to spare, taking the game 52-36. The win was some much needed relief for Bruce as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Bruce got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Laken Corbitt out in front who scored 21 points along with 6 rebounds. That makes it nine consecutive games in which Corbitt has scored at least 25% of Bruce's points. Another player making a difference was A'toria Knox, who scored 16 points along with 5 assists and 5 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Calhoun City put another one in the bag on Saturday to keep their perfect season alive. They really took it to West Lowndes for the full four quarters, racking up a 50-13 victory on the road. Given Calhoun City's advantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 77th, while West Lowndes is ranked 259th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
The losses dropped Bruce to 3-6 and Vardaman to 0-3.
Bruce came up short against Calhoun City when the teams last played back in February, falling 60-52. Can Bruce avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
