Baseball Game Preview: Gateway Eagles vs. Cape Coral Seahawks

After both having extra time off, the Gateway Eagles and the Cape Coral Seahawks will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field one another at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Gateway is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.

Gateway's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed last Thursday. They were the clear victor by an 8-0 margin over Lehigh. That's two games straight that the Eagles have won by exactly eight runs.

Lehigh's batters probably weren't too happy with Hunter Squire, who pitched a no hitter and racked up 16 Ks (he gave up two walks). Those 16 strikeouts gave Squire a new career-high.

At the plate, Devyn Vitiello was excellent, scoring a run and stealing Two bases. while going 1-for-2. Jadon Torres also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Meanwhile, Cape Coral fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against South Fort Myers last Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Wolfpack by a score of 11-10. The Seahawks haven't had much luck with the Wolfpack recently, as the team has come up short the last seven times they've met.

Carter Heisler made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. He has become a key player for Cape Coral: the team is 4-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-7 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Derek Hooker, who scored a run while getting on base in three of his six plate appearances.

Gateway's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-4. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 10.5 hits in those games compared to only 5.2 in the others. As for Cape Coral, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-9.
