League recap: Batavia tops East to extend winning streak

Upstate Eight - River recap Oct. 16, 2012

Batavia extended the longest winning streak in Upstate Eight - River this week by beating East, 19-6. The victory was the eighth in a row for the Bulldogs.

Geneva moved up to 175 from 201 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Vikings were able to make the jump by beating Metea Valley 61-48.

Nick Derr and Bobby Hess gave Geneva a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Derr threw for 171 yards and three touchdowns, while Hess ran for 250 yards. Teammate Joseph Boenzi added to the ground attack by rushing for 92 yards.

Dan Hart made the biggest impact on defense this week as Frank Martin's team bested the Mustangs. The 5-foot-11 defensive back grabbed one interception.

Brannon Barry was the best wideout in the league this week as the Fighting Saints fell to Batavia. Barry racked up seven receptions for 121 yards. Mitch Munroe helped East's passing attack out by catching one ball for 20 yards.

Dennis Piron's team's Micah Coffey and Zachary Strittmatter have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading Upstate Eight - River in both passing and receiving yards. Coffey has thrown for 1431 yards this season, while Strittmatter, a 6-foot-4 receiver, has 46 catches for 688 yards. Hess from the Vikings leads the league in rushing with 1351 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Bulldogs take on Elgin. As it stands, Batavia is in first, while the Maroons are in seventh.

The Bulldogs were able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after besting East. Batavia came in at 24 in the state poll after placing at number 27 last week.
