Football Game Preview: Monsignor Farrell Lions vs. Cardinal Hayes Cardinals

The Monsignor Farrell Lions will face off against the Cardinal Hayes Cardinals at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Monsignor Farrell has five straight wins, Cardinal Hayes has six straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.

If Monsignor Farrell beats Cardinal Hayes with 28 points on Saturday, it's going to be the team's new lucky number: they've won their past two games with that exact score. The Lions blew past St. Joseph-by-the-Sea 28-6 on Friday. The Lions might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five contests by 22 points or more this season.

Monsignor Farrell relied on the efforts of Kevin Gumb Jr, who gained 143 total yards and two touchdowns, and Bryce Moye, who threw for 160 yards and one TD. Michael Libretta got in on the action as well, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Meanwhile, there was early excitement for Cardinal Hayes after they claimed the first score on Friday, but it was Chaminade who ended up claiming the real prize. The Cardinals fell just short of the Flyers by a score of 21-18. While the Cardinals didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Flyers 12-0 in the first quarter.

Cardinal Hayes' defeat dropped their record down to 1-6. As for Monsignor Farrell, their victory bumped their record up to 7-1.

Monsignor Farrell came up short against Cardinal Hayes when the teams last played back in September of 2024, falling 18-12. Thankfully for the Lions, Rich Belin (who rushed for 93 yards and one touchdown on only nine carries, and also threw for 132 yards and a pair of TDs) won't be suiting up this time.
