Football Game Preview: Gatesville Hornets vs. Burnet Bulldogs

The Gatesville Hornets will take on the Burnet Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Gatesville is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.

Gatesville is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They blew past McGregor 55-12 on Friday. Given the Hornets' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 220th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 772nd) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Gatesville to victory, but perhaps none more so than Eli Phillips, who threw for 254 yards and four TDs on only 18 passes, and also rushed for 32 yards. Another rusher making a difference was Cy Burns, who rushed for 129 yards and a pair of scores on only 12 carries.

Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Gatesville proved: they limited McGregor to a paltry 3.2 yards per carry. The Hornets didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 9.4.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Burnet and Fredericksburg meet (four straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Friday. The Bulldogs took a 14-10 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Billies. Having soared to a lofty 31 points in the game before, the Bulldogs couldn't push the score so high this time.

Gatesville's victory bumped their record up to 4-0. As for Burnet, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-3.
