Softball Recap: Meridian Bobcats vs. Cobden Appleknockers
Meridian had lost nine straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 1-9 to make it ten. They took a 7-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cobden Appleknockers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Appleknockers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 15-5 back in March.
As for Cobden, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 7-5. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games.
For Cobden's part, Abby Pitts was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits (and only one walk). Pitts has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Those three runs gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Natalie Storm, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Meridian will host Shawnee at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Redskins have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.4 runs per game on average), something the Bobcats will no doubt try to take advantage of.
