The Wesson Cobras will head out to square off against the Florence Eagles at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Wesson is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.
Thursday just wasn't the day for Wesson's offense. They lost 7-0 to Warren Central on Thursday. Having soared to a lofty 17 runs in the game before, the Cobras' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Florence). They never let Vicksburg get on the board and left with a 25-0 win on Thursday. The victory was familiar territory for the Eagles, who have now won seven contests in a row.
Jaid Jackson made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Ryleigh Travelstead was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and two doubles. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Navayiah Aaron was another key player, going 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one double.
Florence was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .750. They are 7-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Wesson has been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-10 record this season. As for Florence, their record is now 10-8.
Friday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Wesson hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .367. However, it's not like Florence struggles in that department as they've averaged .333. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Wesson suffered a grim 12-0 defeat to Florence when the teams last played on March 3rd. Can the Cobras avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
