Baseball Recap: Mater Lakes Academy Takes a Loss

Mater Lakes Academy was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Nova Titans. The Bears were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Titans apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

Mater Lakes Academy got a good showing from ENRIQUE GOMEZ, who didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over four innings pitched. GOMEZ has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run any time he's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, ANTHONY VELAZQUEZ made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 1-for-1 with one home run and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Mater Lakes Academy's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 3-6-3 when he doesn't). Kenny Bencosme also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.

Mater Lakes Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 7-7-3. As for Nova, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-6.

Mater Lakes Academy wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next contest, an 11-1 win against South Dade on the 24th. As for Nova, they have also already played their next matchup, a 5-4 loss against NSU University on the 24th.
