Basketball Recap: Ayala Proves Higher State Rank Is No Mistake

Ayala won the last time they faced Claremont and things went their way on Thursday too. The Ayala Bulldogs came out on top against the Claremont Wolfpack by a score of 63-51. Given the Bulldogs' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 335th, while the Wolfpack are ranked 859th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Despite the defeat, Claremont had strong showings from Tyler Zitar, who went 6 of 9 en route to 14 points and seven boards, and Hugo Montejo, who went 9 for 14 on his way to 19 points and three steals. Montejo is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Tristan Sulca, who posted six points.

The victory made it two in a row for Ayala and bumps their season record up to 17-10. As for Claremont, they dropped their record down to 10-17 with the loss, which was their seventh straight at home.

Ayala will host Bonita at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Claremont, they will head out on the road to take on Diamond Bar at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Claremont is facing Diamond Bar at the right time seeing as Diamond Bar is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
