Carlsbad and San Dieguito Academy are an even 5-5 against one another since October of 2016, but not for long. The Lancers will head out to face off against the Mustangs at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.
Carlsbad came into their game on Wednesday off a hard-fought close win, but unfortunately suffered a serious change of fortune. They lost 3-0 to Torrey Pines. It was the first time this season that the Lancers let down their fans at home.
Carlsbad was held off the scoreboard, but that almost wasn't the case: they kept the first set very close. The final score came out to 25-23, 25-14, 25-19.
Meanwhile, it looked like the Kentucky Derby when San Dieguito Academy took on Rancho Bernardo on Wednesday. The Mustangs fell just short of the Broncos by a score of 3-2.
San Dieguito Academy started the match hot and won the first two sets, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 23-25, 16-25, 25-15, 25-20, 15-11.
Carlsbad will have to contain Ellie Burr as she made an impact in San Dieguito Academy's last game. She had 31 digs and two aces. Burr is on a roll when it comes to digs, as she's now had 13 or more in each of the last 12 games she's played. Another player making a difference was Riley Balogh, who had six blocks, four digs, and three aces.
San Dieguito Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 8-21-1. As for Carlsbad, they suffered their first home loss, dropping their record down to 18-8.
Carlsbad took their win against San Dieguito Academy in their previous matchup two weeks ago by a conclusive 3-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lancers since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
