Basketball Recap: Avery Weems' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Sandhills Valley over Hyannis

Sandhills Valley was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their 30th straight defeat dating back to last season. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 41-35 heartbreaker at the hands of the Hyannis Longhorns. The Mavericks were probably out for revenge after losing 38-14 to them when the teams met back in January of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Sandhills Valley's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Avery Weems, who posted 12 points along with eight boards and three steals. Weems has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last five times she's played. Kelsey Amos also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Even though they lost, Sandhills Valley smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive rebounds in three consecutive matches.

Sandhills Valley's defeat dropped their record down to 0-9. As for Hyannis, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 5-6.

Sandhills Valley wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 57-26 loss against Sandhills/Thedford on the 21st. As for Hyannis, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 53-46 defeat against Morrill on the 22nd.
