Basketball Recap: Council Grove Comes Up Short

Council Grove has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They were two points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 57-55 heartbreaker at the hands of the Clay Center Tigers. The Braves were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Tigers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in February of 2020.

When it comes to explaining why Council Grove lost on Monday, don't look at Brycen Palmquist. Despite the final result, he went 6-for-12 on his way to 14 points along with five boards and five steals. Palmquist is becoming a predictor of Council Grove's success: when he posts at least three steals the team is 10-4 (and 2-3 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Kyzer Spittles, who went 5-for-10 en route to 13 points.

Council Grove's loss dropped their record down to 12-7. As for Clay Center, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-4-1 record this season.

Coming up, Council Grove will venture away from home to square off against Burlington at 7:30 p.m. on February 24th. As for Clay Center, they will host Rock Creek on Friday.
