Football Game Preview: Somerset Academy - Canyons Cougars vs. Gateway Charter Griffins

Somerset Academy - Canyons has won three straight games at home, while Gateway Charter has won three straight on the road, but those streaks won't matter much on Monday. The Cougars will welcome the Griffins at 7:30 p.m. The two teams have allowed few points on average (Somerset Academy - Canyons 5.5, Gateway Charter 8.5) so any points scored will be well earned.

Somerset Academy - Canyons is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Wednesday. They breezed past Atlantic to the tune of 34-0. The result was nothing new for the Cougars, who have now won 11 matchups by 20 points or more so far this season.

Somerset Academy - Canyons found their leader in sophomore Ava Wotipka, who threw for 219 yards and a pair of TDs, and also rushed for 58 yards and one score on only six carries.

Somerset Academy - Canyons didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. Delanie Doty led the group effort, picking up two of those interceptions all by herself. Wotipka got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Meanwhile, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Gateway Charter beat Chaminade-Madonna 12-6 on Wednesday.

The critical scores for Gateway Charter came from Yaneila Roman Lopez and Maryah Maldonado.

One reason for the win was Gateway Charter's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for five sacks. Jazmyn Johnson was especially locked on to Chaminade-Madonna's QB and sacked her twice.

Somerset Academy - Canyons' win bumped their record up to 14-3. As for Gateway Charter, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-2 record this season.
